Avocado bread with halloumi and za’atar oil

This avocado bread with halloumi doesn’t just look like a beautiful crusher – it is a crusher: visually & taste-wise! The recipe is made in no time at all and will definitely keep hunger at bay for quite a while. So there is absolutely no reason to become hangry.

Which bread is suitable for the avocado sandwich?

Honestly? This question is very difficult to answer, because bread is purely a matter of taste. I tend to prefer a rye or mixed bread with a crispy crust. Friends of mine are more into toast with grains or brown bread. And then there are the white bread lovers … but that’s too bland for me. Because the taste of cereal harmonizes so well with the nutty note of avocado.

Halloumi – the grilled cheese from Cyprus

Halloumi? It’s that squeaky cheese, isn’t it? You are absolutely right about that. You probably know it from wild BBQs where it was grilled in slices on the barbecue until crispy. A little insider tip from me: it also tastes great out of the pan … and of course it squeaks too.

I was once asked how to slice halloumi without destroying it. That is an absolutely legitimate question! Halloumi always tends to break in two when you are actually being super careful and really need nice even slices. But nothing helps except a sharp knife and a lot of sensitivity. And since we’re talking about the topping for your avocado bread, you’re sure to go the extra mile.

Quick & easy – the ingredients you need for your slices of bread

You don’t need much for your crispy roll, just a few tasty products:

  • Fresh (crusty) bread
  • Avocado
  • Halloumi
  • Olive oil
  • Za’atar

How to prepare the avocado bread

To conjure up a crispy avocado bread with halloumi and za’atar oil, you only need 1 – 2 slices of good rye bread. Then simply mash a nice creamy avocado on top, drape the briefly fried halloumi on top and top the whole thing with a little za’atar oil. Za’atar oil is simply some za’atar mixed with olive oil – mega good and mega easy!

Tips for the perfect sandwich

  • Buy fresh bread from the bakery. The ones from the supermarket have usually been lying around for a few days and don’t taste as full-bodied.
  • Toast your slice of bread for your avocado sandwich in a pan beforehand (preferably with butter). Then it will be even crispier.
  • Would you like a velvety-soft avocado? When shopping, check whether the fruit is ripe. Press gently on the shell – if it gives way easily, you can put it in your shopping basket.
  • For your homemade za’atar oil, use the best spice mix and an extra virgin olive oil for a slight spiciness.
  • Avocado and halloumi not enough for you? Then add a few cherry tomatoes and spring onions on top.

Are you hungry yet? Then get to the bread and cut a few thick slices for your avocado bread with halloumi. I wish you a good appetite.
