Fattoush?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Fattoush is a <strong>colorful salad<\/strong> with <strong>pita chips<\/strong> and is therefore also known as <strong>bread salad<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The salad is said to originate from the rural regions of Lebanon, where farmers crumbled <strong>stale<\/strong> bread onto their <strong>fresh<\/strong> vegetables or fried them in <strong>olive oil<\/strong> for more flavor. As <strong>seasonal<\/strong> vegetables are used for the salad, the ingredients can vary. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the whole, fattoush is a colorful mixed salad that is perfect for spring and summer. But the special thing about fattoush is the <strong>crunchy<\/strong> bread chips made from deep-fried <a href=\"https:\/\/bistrobadia.de\/en\/lebanese-pita-bread\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">flatbread<\/a>.   <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The name <em>fattoush<\/em> also comes from the Arabic term <em>fitt<\/em>, which means <em>to tear<\/em>. This refers to the tearing or breaking of the flatbread. It&#8217;s a <strong>mixed<\/strong> salad,&#8221; my sister replied. &#8220;With tomatoes?&#8221; she asked, because she loves tomatoes.    <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To their delight, Fattoush also contains <strong>tomatoes<\/strong> &#8211; but also much more:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>crunchy <strong>romaine lettuce<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>pink <strong>radishes<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Colorful <strong>peppers<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>fresh <strong>cucumbers<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>mild <strong>spring onions<\/strong> <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>fresh <strong>purslane<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>fresh <strong>herbs<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>tangy lemon<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>aromatic <strong>spices<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Good <strong>olive oil<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>stale flatbread<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Purslane<\/strong> looks very similar to lamb&#8217;s lettuce, but has much fleshier leaves and tastes slightly <strong>nutty<\/strong>. Unfortunately, purslane is not available everywhere and at all times. That&#8217;s why I sometimes reach for the more bland lamb&#8217;s lettuce as an alternative.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-sumac-amp-bread-chips\">Sumac &amp; bread chips<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>dressing<\/strong> also contains a special ingredient: <a href=\"https:\/\/bistrobadia.de\/en\/sumac-spice-of-the-levant\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">sumac<\/a>.<br>If you&#8217;ve read a few of my other recipes, you&#8217;ve probably come across this <strong>spice<\/strong> before. It tastes slightly <strong>tart<\/strong> and <strong>sour<\/strong> and gives the salad its unmistakable flavor. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-a-few-tips-for-a-sensational-salad\">A few tips for a sensational salad<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>If you don&#8217;t like it quite so greasy, you can also simply toast the flatbread in the <strong>oven<\/strong>. Brush it with a little oil to make it really crunchy. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Don&#8217;t know how to eat the salad? Do as my niece does &#8211; pick the tomatoes out of the salad and place them on the crispy flatbread slivers. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Do you have good <strong>pomegranate syrup<\/strong> at home?
