All you need is a little time to roll out the dough thinly. You can then use the homemade filo pastry straight away &#8211; whether you fill it with sweet or savory fillings or toppings is up to you.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-is-filo-pastry\">What is filo pastry?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Filo pastry is a wafer-thin dough that is brushed with butter and layered when preparing a dish. The <strong>vegan dough<\/strong> is very popular in the Levant. But not only in the Levant, but also in other Middle Eastern countries and parts of the Balkans. Whether <a href=\"https:\/\/bistrobadia.de\/en\/baklava-recipe\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">baklava<\/a>, b\u00f6rek or <a href=\"https:\/\/bistrobadia.de\/en\/rekak-cheese-rolls\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">rekak<\/a>, filo pastry is used for some classic dishes.     <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is unclear exactly which country the filo pastry (or <strong>phyllo pastry<\/strong>) comes from. Many countries claim the original recipe for themselves and there is no clear literature on the subject. As with so many dishes in the Levant, each region adds its own secret ingredient or creates its own variation.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-a-handful-of-ingredients-for-homemade-filo-pastry\">A handful of ingredients for homemade filo pastry<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>To make simple filo pastry yourself, you only need <strong>a few ingredients<\/strong>, a clean work surface, a rolling pin and some baking paper. These are basically the basics that everyone has at home if you bake from time to time. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Have a look in your kitchen cupboard to see if you already have the following <strong>ingredients<\/strong> for making your own filo pastry at home:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Flour<\/strong>: type 550 wheat flour is particularly suitable for elastic doughs. Alternatively, you can also use 00 flour (pizza flour). <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Cornflour:<\/strong> is essential here to prevent the layers of dough from sticking together.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Vegetable oil:<\/strong> I used neutral rapeseed oil. But you can also use a good olive oil. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>White wine vinegar:<\/strong> is added to the dough so that it becomes crispy when baked.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Salt:<\/strong> a good pinch enhances the taste of the dough.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>So, have you got everything you need or do you still have to go shopping? If you still need to buy something, then go ahead, because we&#8217;ll continue with a short tutorial on how to make your own filo pastry.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-make-your-own-filo-pastry-in-5-simple-steps\">Make your own filo pastry in 5 simple steps<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>I often just buy the ready-made dough in the supermarket, but it is one of the <strong>basic recipes<\/strong> of Levantine cuisine. For this reason, I had to make my own filo pastry at some point. And I was surprised how simple the recipe is and that everything worked out so well.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I was wary of the thin layers of dough and wasn&#8217;t sure whether they would stick together when I finally rolled them out. But thanks to the <strong>cornflour<\/strong>, this didn&#8217;t happen and I was able to separate each individual layer from the other easily. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So don&#8217;t be afraid, just give it a try.
