Grilled Cheese Sandwich with Za’atar

Sometimes it just has to be quick & dirty! Whether it’s a super cheesy breakfast or a hearty snack to tame your hunger, the Grilled Cheese Sandwich with Za’atar is the perfect all-rounder. So even the grimmest grumbling monster in your stomach has absolutely no chance! Who can resist hot, hearty and cheesy?

The power of cheese threads

As simple as this recipe is, the power of the cheese threads is also strong and quickly captivates us. Master Yoda already knew that, I swear! So be sure to use a cheese with good melting properties for the grilled cheese sandwich. I highly recommend the Turkish Kashkaval cheese, but a good Gouda or Mozzarella will definitely do. Just grate it quickly and put it on the pita bread. Then add a good pinch of za’atar for flavour and a dash of olive oil to make it even juicier.

The Grilled Cheese Sandwich with Za’atar is best made in a contact grill, then the bread gets plenty of heat from both sides and becomes nice and crispy. If you don’t have one, you can of course toast it in a frying pan on both sides until the cheese has melted and is nicely stringy. It takes less than five minutes and you’re ready to go!

For me, it’s always the greatest thing when I hold the grilled cheese sandwich in my hand, tear it apart and the cheese strands stretch. At the latest then I am hypnotised and fall into a frenzy. Crispy, juicy and simply delicious! I recommend serving crunchy pickled vegetables with it. It gives a perfect contrast to the cheese.

  • Heat up the contact grill. Alternatively, you can use a frying pan or the oven, but your flatbread sandwich will not be toasted on both sides.
  • Grate the cheese and cover one half of the pita bread with it. Sprinkle with za'atar and olive oil and fold over.
  • Toast the grilled cheese sandwich in a hot contact grill until the cheese melts.
