Falafel wrap – the Lebanese street food classic

Falafel wrap is one of the classics from Levantine cuisine that you absolutely must try. The vegan falafel wrap is best known as Lebanese street food and is the perfect lunchtime snack or snack on the go.

The falafel wrap ingredients – a handful of classics

What makes Lebanese street food, the falafel wrap, so special? It’s quite simple: it’s the perfect blend of different textures and flavors. Because it consists of several classic components. The three main components are Lebanese flatbread, falafel and tahini sauce. You can always find these traditional dishes as a side dish or as part of a mezze.

For the falafel wrap with the classic ingredients, as I know it from Lebanon, you need the following ingredients:

  • Lebanese flatbread: you can make this thin, elastic bread yourself or buy it from an Arab bakery. You can find the basic recipe here.
  • Falafel: should be fresh and crispy. You can of course also buy some, but please don’t buy the weird ones from the supermarket next door, but frozen ones from an Arab supermarket. You can find the basic recipe for falafel here.
  • Tahini sauce: is quickly stirred together. Use good tahini or make it yourself. You can find the basic recipe for tahini sauce here.
  • Pickled cucumbers: Lebanese pickled cucumbers are very salty. So please use really salty cucumbers and not sweet and sour pickled cucumbers.
  • Tomatoes: you can use the simple, juicy vine tomatoes.
  • Pink pickled turnips: you won’t find them everywhere. You should also buy them in the Arab supermarket.
  • Parsley: you can add it, stalks and all, to the flatbread. This is street food and can therefore be a little coarser.

If you really want to make everything yourself, then you should set aside a few hours. Or even better: organize a cooking evening with friends, as the preparation of the individual components can be easily divided up.

You can also prepare the falafel in the oven or in a hot air fryer to save a few calories. Alternatively, you can modify the recipe and prepare the street food with beet falafel or Egyptian falafel taameya. But first try the classic original falafel wrap recipe.

I admit: the vegan falafel wrap and its ingredients need a little preparation (unless you buy ready-made falafel). But it’s worth it! And once everything is well prepared, you can make the wrap quickly and easily.

Make your own falafel wrap – how to make Lebanese street food at home

Do you have all the ingredients ready or do you need to make a quick trip to the Arab supermarket? The great thing about this falafel wrap recipe is that you can prepare the individual ingredients in advance.

If you make falafel yourself, for example, then make an extra portion straight away, because you can freeze falafel – just like the flatbread. Sometimes I also freeze bought bread, because for me, Lebanese flatbread is often the savior in times of hunger.

You can also prepare the tahini sauce a day in advance, because once it’s ready, you can store it in the fridge for about 3 days.

How to make vegetarian falafel wrap – in 5 easy steps

  1. Prepare (or buy) the flatbread.
  2. Prepare falafel (or buy).
  3. Prepare the tahini sauce.
  4. Chop the tomatoes, cucumber and pickles.
  5. Fill the falafel wrap, roll up and enjoy.

Once the flatbread, falafel and tahini sauce are prepared, all you need to do is roll everything up into a wrap. That sounds really easy, doesn’t it? And it is. Don’t let the preparation put you off – it’s worth the effort, because fresh, crispy, homemade falafel makes every sandwich that much better.

I hope you enjoy preparing them and, of course, bon appétit. If you have any questions or suggestions, please write me a comment. And if you liked the falafel wrap recipe, please leave a rating.

5 tips for perfect falafel wraps

  1. The best bread is, of course, Lebanese flatbread. Alternatively, you can also use pita bread or Turkish flatbread. However, you won’t be able to roll wraps out of these.
  2. It is best to prepare the falafel fresh and then use it straight away in the wrap. The falafel mixture can be prepared the day before.
  3. Use plenty of tahini sauce so that the falafel wrap doesn’t get too dry.
  4. Press the falafel well when you place them on the flatbread. This allows them to absorb the sauce better.
  5. Fold in the bottom of the wrap to prevent the falafel from falling out.

How long do the falafel wraps keep?

The falafel wraps taste best fresh, of course. If there are any leftovers, they can be stored in airtight containers in the fridge for approx. 3 days. However, you should store the components separately, otherwise they may become soggy.

Do you have a contact grill? Because if you like it crispy, you can warm the wrap in it and the bread will crisp up slightly.
