Lazy cake – Grandma’s recipe
Lazy cake according to grandma’s recipe is a chocolate biscuit cake that is at home in almost every country. In Lebanon and other Levantine countries it is known as Sukseh, in the USA it is called Lazy Cake and in Germany Cold Dog, Cold Snout or DDR Cake.
Chocolate biscuit cake – grandma’s recipe without egg
The ingredients for the lazy cake can vary. Some recipes include eggs on the list of ingredients. However, my grandma’s chocolate biscuit cake doesn’t use any eggs at all, but there is a lot of chocolate in the cake or chocolate coating. You can find out the difference between chocolate and couverture in this article.
These are the basic ingredients for the lazy cake:
- Chocolate coating: I have opted for a mixture of dark and whole milk so that the recipe is neither too bitter nor too sweet. You can adjust the ratio to your favorite sweetness.
- Coconut oil: Make sure it is neutral in taste, otherwise the cake will taste of coconut.
- Cream: Fresh whipped cream with a natural fat content.
- Vanilla sugar: I like to mix it myself from ground vanilla pods and granulated sugar. However, you can also use conventional vanilla sugar.
- Butter cookies: the rectangular ones are best suited to the oblong loaf pan.
I simply love recipes that contain few ingredients and are irresistible. I have therefore gratefully added this simple recipe for cold dog to my recipe book and am now happy to share it with you.
Lazy cake – simple recipe without baking in just a few steps
There used to be a trend with no bake recipes and the great description: Today it’s not your oven that bakes, but your fridge. These were often cheesecakes or cream cakes. This cold dog from grandma’s no-bake recipe works on the same principle.
How to prepare the layered chocolate biscuit cake:
- Heat the cream, vanilla sugar and coconut oil and stir together.
- Add the chopped couverture to the coconut-cream mixture and melt into a creamy mass.
- Alternate layers of chocolate mixture and cookies in the cake tin until there is no more chocolate mixture left.
- Place in the fridge to harden and then serve the cold dog cut into slices.

My tip: It’s not that easy to keep the spacing even. So that you don’t pour too much chocolate mixture into the mold for the first layer, you can draw a small mark of approx. 0.5 cm on the baking paper. Alternatively, you can use a wooden stick with a mark on it, which you can then stick into the mixture to measure the height.

Lazy cake – the best recipe for every occasion
I’m a huge fan of this chocolate biscuit cake because it’s crunchy and creamy at the same time. I simply can’t resist the interplay of the different textures and the extra portion of chocolate.
Grandma’s lazy cake was served on festive occasions and was the cake where people fought over the last piece. No matter which country you are in, there is always a recipe for lazy cake. The ingredients and the shape of the chocolate biscuit cake vary.
It can have an elongated, roundish shape and look like a salami, or it can be layered in a round form and served as a classic slice of cake – in Germany it is layered in an elongated loaf pan and then cut into slices.
Some mix a few drops of rum into the chocolate mixture, swap chocolate for cocoa or butter for coconut oil. The original lazy cake recipe is therefore difficult to decipher.
What is the shelf life of the Lazy Cake?
If you make this delicious chocolate biscuit cake without eggs, it will keep for approx. 3 weeksin the fridge. The cake should be placed in an airtight box to protect it from moisture.
Can you freeze the lazy cake?
It is also possible to freeze the cake for approx. 3 months. Use a freezer bag and seal it tightly. You can also cut the cake into pieces in advance and then freeze them in pairs, so you have small portions of cake ready to go.
Leave the cake to defrost slowly in the fridge so that it doesn’t get soggy.
