Plum Jam with Turmeric and Thyme

Plum jam with turmeric and thyme sounds very special at first. But it only sounds like that, because the taste is sensational. Turmeric has always been for me a very stepmotherly treated spice. No matter who I asked, no one knew what flavor turmeric actually has. It is perhaps only known as a component of curry powder. Yet turmeric tastes fantastic and it can be combined incredibly well. One of my favorite combinations is the mix of turmeric and plums.

Plum jam with spices and herbs

I’m not really a lover of jams or marmalades. In the morning I prefer to eat savory. But every now and then I get really ravenous for it. Then there is nothing more great than a fresh roll with a good layer of butter and this plum jam.

Turmeric gives the sweet spread a certain savory note. But for the life of me, I don’t know how to describe the taste of turmeric…just like this: somehow hearty, full or voluminous. If you can, you are very welcome to share it with me and everyone else in the comments section.

Chance makes the jam

The thyme in this jam was actually an accident. I had laid out fresh thyme to dry for another recipe and wanted to make some room in the kitchen. I put everything away and awkwardly – but fortunately – two small sprigs of dried thyme fell into the still-hot plum jam. I was really annoyed and more or less fished the sprigs out of the mix. But when I tasted it, I had a few leaves of thyme with me – and it tasted fantastic!

Back to the plum jam, which you can make yourself quickly and easily. Because you are ready in half an hour! If you also decant everything into beautiful jars and stick a fancy label on it, you also have directly a super gift for family and friends.

Recipe for plum jam

  • 3 sterile preserving jars (200 ml each)


  • 500 g pitted plums
  • 1 Vanilla bean
  • 250 g Gelling sugar 2:1
  • 2 Tablespoon Water
  • 1 – 1,5 Tablespoon Turmeric
  • 1 teaspoon Thyme (rubbed)


  • Stone the plums, weigh them and cut them into small pieces.
  • Scrape the pulp out of the vanilla pod. Do not throw away the vanilla pod.
  • Place the plums in a saucepan with the sugar and water and boil for approx. 5 minutes until bubbling.
  • Briefly remove the pot from the heat.
    If desired, you can now puree the mass with a blender. But please make sure that no splashes come out of the pot – the mass is very hot!
  • Stir the turmeric, vanilla pulp, vanilla pod and thyme into the mixture and reduce for a further 5 minutes.
  • At the end, remove the vanilla pod and transfer the hot jam into the preserving jars.
  • Now turn the preserving jars upside down for about 15 minutes and let the jam cool.
