Puff pastry cheese sticks
Puff pastry cheese sticks are an ingenious snack for a series marathon or finger food for parties. With my simple recipe, you can quickly make your own cheese sticks from puff pastry.
Puff pastry cheese sticks with just 3 ingredients
I love snacks that crunch! That’s why I like to make these crispy puff pastry sticks with cheese from time to time. And also because you only need 3 ingredients.
This cheese sticks recipe is quick and easy to make yourself. It’s particularly handy if you have a spontaneous visitor, as the puff pastry sticks are ready in 25 minutes! You only need these 3 ingredients… and salt and pepper:
- Puff pastry: a ready-made roll. You can also freeze some in advance so you always have one to hand.
- Eggs: if you brush the puff pastry with egg, it becomes nice and crispy and gets a great golden-brown color.
- Cheese: you can use grated cheese, then it’s quicker. I like strong cheeses like cheddar or mountain cheese.
Which types of cheese are best?
To make the puff pastry cheese sticks nice and aromatic, you should use a cheese with a strong flavor. However, if you prefer it mild, I can also recommend less piquant cheeses.
- Mountain cheese: spicy and slightly nutty in taste, becomes crispy when baked
- Cheddar: spicy and strong in taste (depending on the age of the cheese), melts well and has a beautiful golden yellow color
- Emmental: sweetish, strong and nutty in taste (depending on age), melts well
- Feta: salty and spicy in taste, remains rather crumbly when melted
- Gouda: mild to strong and spicy in taste (depending on age), melts well
- Mozzarella: mild and slightly sour in taste, melts very well
- Parmesan: salty and strong in taste, becomes crispy when baked
Make your own cheese sticks – 5 tips for crispy puff pastry sticks
- Brush one half of the puff pastry with egg. This helps the cheese to stick better and gives the puff pastry cheese sticks a slight sheen and a golden-yellow color.
- You can cut the dough into strips of any thickness. The number of crispy cheese sticks will vary depending on this.
- Leave enough space on the baking tray between the puff pastry sticks, as they will rise during baking and therefore need a little more room.
- Bake the puff pastry cheese sticks at approx. 200° C top and bottom heat or at 180° C fan oven – this will allow them to rise well and make them nice and crispy.
- Leave the cheese sticks to cool on the tray so that they are easier to remove and don’t break so easily.

Variations for puff pastry cheese sticks
My version of puff pastry cheese sticks is the easiest you can make. However, I have a few more inspirations on how you can quickly pimp the crispy sticks. Simply add a few spices, for example:

Are spices not enough for you as a special? Then you can also change the filling. How about this:
- Creme fraiche and spring onions
- Tomato salsa
- Green pesto
- Chili sauce
- Sour cream and bacon
Of course, you can also make a sweet version:
- Jam
- Chocolate cream and chopped nuts
- Cinnamon and sugar
