Pita bread

Pita bread gives off a heavenly aroma as it slowly rises in the oven. The dough forms a fluffy crumb on the inside and a thin crust on the outside. Then, like me, do you sit in front of the oven and impatiently watch the baking process? Because it smells so wonderful, I want to try the dumpling as soon as it comes out of the oven. But of course, every time it’s too hot and I burn my fingers. And yet it’s a spectacle that thrills me every time – which is why you should definitely make pita bread yourself.

Make vegan pita pockets yourself – quick & easy

To make your own fluffy pita breads, you don ‘t need many ingredients. And the ones you do need are also purely plant-based. So anyone who eats a vegan diet can fill a bread bag. For the dough you need the following ingredients:

  • Wheat flour (type 550; excellent for bread and rolls)
  • Dry yeast (of course you can also use fresh yeast)
  • Water
  • Sugar
  • Salt
  • Olive oil

These basic ingredients have almost everyone in the pantry and for the pita breads they are quickly together. Now simply mix all the ingredients together one after the other. The easiest way to do this is with a food processor and its dough hook.

Since not everyone has a food processor, you can also use a hand mixer with a dough hook or simply use your hands. Then you also get a feel for the pita dough – it has to be kneaded for a few minutes and you notice how it changes its consistency. The dough is quite moist, but should not stick to your fingers after kneading.

So you have prepared the dough quickly – now give it a little time to develop. When it has risen nicely, you can work it further. To do this, divide the dough into smaller pieces and let them rest for a few minutes before rolling them out into round or oval patties.

In the oven, the pita breads need only a few minutes. Important: Heat the oven properly! You can then sit in front of the oven and watch the pita pockets being baked – as the dough slowly puffs up. A beautiful spectacle and it smells so good everywhere!

Pita filling

What you fill your pita bag with is entirely up to you. You can spread it with creamy hummus or bean puree, fill it with colorful oven vegetables and halloumi, or with spicy chicken skewers. Classic shawarma or kafta is also great. Add a nutty tahini sauce or do you prefer it spicy? Then I recommend Zhug, because this green sauce has it all! Fresh herbs like parsley, mint and cilantro round out your stuffed bread bag.

So there are various ways to fill your pita bag – you can definitely find more ideas on the blog. But to fill it, you’ll have to make your own pita bread first. Also, if you’re interested in thin pita bread to wrap yourself a wrap, check out this recipe here.

Get into the kitchen, put on your apron and start kneading – have fun and enjoy your meal later.
