Roasted Air Fryer chickpeas

Roasted Air Fryer Chickpeas are a great alternative to greasy potato chips. Because I love to reach for them when I get cozy on the sofa for a movie night in front of the TV. Roasted chickpeas are a delicious alternative that you can prepare quickly and easily with your Air Fryer.

And it won’t be boring in terms of taste either, because you can really let off steam and try out the spices. In this recipe for roasted chickpeas, you’ll find a few tasty ideas that you should definitely try out!

Ingredients for the chickpea snack

I actually always have all the ingredients for this in my pantry and fortunately a huge selection of colorful spices. So there’s never a dull moment in the snack bowl.

You can get the ingredients for the Air Fryer chickpeas at any supermarket if you don’t have chickpeas, spices or olive oil at home.

If you have company over, make several portions with different spice mixes – your friends will love this snack!

This recipe makes enough for about 1-2 portions, depending on how big your snack craving is – I always like to share.

You will need the following ingredients for the crispy chickpeas (you will find the exact quantities below in the recipe card):

  • Chickpeas from the jar (or tin)
  • Olive oil
  • Salt
  • Paprika powder
  • Cumin
  • chili flakes
  • Garlic powder
  • Cinnamon

Please don’t throw away the chickpea water, as you can still use it! If you’re wondering what else to do with it, take a look at the article on aquafaba. There you will find everything you need to know about bean water and recipes such as vegan chocolate mousse. Auquafaba, as the cooking water from pulses is also known, is a fantastic substitute in vegan cuisine.

Which chickpeas to use?

Chickpeas are available dried or pre-cooked in tins. I recommend using the cooked ones so that you can prepare the snack quickly. Otherwise you would have to soak the dried ones overnight and then cook them. That’s too time-consuming! So the only question that remains is: can or jar?

I always use organic chickpeas from the jar. This is because they have less salt and are not contaminated or affected in taste by canned metal.

Air Fryer chickpeas – the preparation

This recipe for roasted chickpeas is really so easy that you can’t go wrong. Turn on the air fryer, sprinkle a few spices over the pulses and the snack is ready in a few minutes.

You can find the exact step-by-step instructions below in the recipe card. The total preparation time is approx. 20 minutes:

  1. Rinse the chickpeas under water and rub dry with a kitchen towel.
  2. Place the olive oil, spices and chickpeas in a bowl and mix well.
  3. Place the seasoned chickpeas in the air fryer and roast for approx. 15 minutes at 200 °C until crispy. Depending on the air fryer, mix from time to time or use the shaking function.
  4. Then leave to cool and snack or pack in a tin for later.

That doesn’t sound difficult, does it? If you are not satisfied with the crispiness of the chickpeas, you can also roast them for a shorter or longer time in the air fryer – or change the temperature. Some people like it when the snack is still a little soft on the inside.

Alternative spice mixes for roasted chickpeas

You can give free rein to your creativity when seasoning the chickpea snack. I have a few other ideas here that you can try using this recipe. Feel free to write me in the comments below which flavor is your favorite.

Hearty spice blends:

  • Za’atar & sea salt
  • Sea salt & coarse pepper
  • Dukkah
  • Smoked paprika powder, chili & garlic powder
  • Harissa, honey, sumac & salt
  • Thyme, rosemary & salt
  • Curry, garam masala or tandoori spice mixes
  • Onion powder, yeast flakes & salt

Sweet spice mixtures:

  • Sweeteners such as sugar, maple syrup, honey, date syrup or agave syrup
  • Cinnamon & sugar
  • Vanilla or tonka bean & sugar

For the sweet versions, you can add the sweetener halfway through the roasting time, when the chickpeas caramelize and become crunchy and sweet.

Season chickpeas before or after roasting?

If the chickpeas are seasoned before roasting, bitter substances can develop during the process. However, this depends on the spice. With my home-made spice mix, nothing tasted bitter after baking. Would you rather play it safe? Then only season your Air Fryer after the roasting process.

What goes with a snack?

You can not only snack on the crispy chickpeas between meals, but also use them as a topping for salads or soups. This gives your food an upgrade in an instant and turns a simple dish into a little highlight.

Are roasted Air Fryer chickpeas healthy?

Crispy chickpeas are vegan and gluten-free, so you can always serve them. You should definitely include chickpeas in your diet, whether roasted, as a hot breakfast or stew. They contain many valuable nutrients that keep you full for a long time, prevent cravings and aid digestion.

Roasted chickpeas are a healthy alternative to potato chips, chips and the like and are particularly interesting for fitness fans as they are especially high in protein. But the small chickpeas also contain vitamins, minerals and fiber.

How to keep the chickpea snack crispy

The roasted chickpeas remain crunchy for approx. 2-3 days in airtight packaging. But they won’t stay in there that long anyway, because you can’t stop snacking on them once you’ve started. I usually just use the jar in which the chickpeas were previously preserved for storage.

You can prepare this snack quickly and easily and then eat it straight away. And if you don’t have an air fryer at home yet, simply roast the chickpeas in the oven using this recipe.

I hope you enjoy preparing and trying out the different spices… and of course, bon appétit.
